Dedication
There is no nobler deed then committing oneself wholly and completely to a task, idea, or purpose. I often sacrifice my time, sweat, tears, and blood to put into what I call dedication. Many people know what dedication is, for they themselves have witnessed dedication coming forth, and worked hard for something they need. Dedication is not only a work, but also a thing which arises out of the many thousands of years of successful accomplishments. This can be anything from studying hard for a test, working out every day after school, or even going to church. All people should know of this, for all people have dedicated their valuable time to an individual object. Dedication is an extraordinary object, and it contributes to anything confounded with success.
When an individual or group of people achieve a goal or task which has meaning, the work dedication comes to mind. The work dedication is a noun, and the work dedicated is an adjective. While the work dedicate is a verb, and the word dedicatedly is an adverb. According to the Merriam-Webster definition I found online, dedication is, “devotion to a cause, ideal, or purpose.” My definition of the word would be a wholehearted faithfulness to a cause, person, or idea. Other words related to dedication include consecration, inscription, and zealous. Dedication can be applied to many different forms, and may be seen in places you would least expect it. Hence, dedication is a powerful force to be reckoned with, and takes place in strong individuals.
Whenever I think of a word that directly applies to me, I think of the word dedication. I have direct experience with dedication after twelve years of school, ten years of showing and raising livestock, six years of track, and four years of football. Even though I have worked with people at the feedlots who were the exact opposite of me, who hated dedicating their time and effort for something they truly did not believe in. Dedication for me combined a number of arduous sprint workouts, strenuous work, and torturous mental toughness. That includes grueling heat, blistering cold, rain or shine, excruciating pain, anguish, misfortune, agony, and times of sorrow and despair. And there were many instances where I was injured, and had to sit in the whirlpool for hours at a time. Mason is my brother, and he absolutely hates working hard for things in life, or even preoccupying his time with anything strenuous or laborious. Dedication includes maintaining a high tolerance level, which is why I had no problem getting up at two o’clock in the morning to watch one of my many sows give birth to ten or more pigs. Exhibiting hogs at shows 12 hours away is also a form of dedication, since nobody wants to sit in a truck for that amount of time. Baby pigs in particular need great amounts of work, including shots, castration, eyeteeth clipped, ears notched, tails docked, and hoofs trimmed. Track and livestock are huge parts of my life, and I have devoted much of my time to them. Therefore, I consider dedication to be a direct influence on my own personal lifestyle.
As dedication does not only take part in my own lifestyle, it is also a major contributor in the history of the world. A prime example of this may be Abraham Lincoln’s fight to free slaves and in doing so cost him his life. His dedication led to the emancipation of millions of slaves, and brought America together again. Another perfect example of dedication is the American colonists, who gave everything to lead a more tranquil lifestyle. The pilgrims starved and froze to death, were killed by Native Americans, and were thousands of miles away from England’s support. Later on in the Revolutionary War, even as America was greatly outnumbered, we still ended up defeating the British. Iwo Jima is another example, as the Japanese knew they were outnumbered by 60,000 troops. Only 1,000 Japanese soldiers survived the battle, but this just shows the devotion to their country. Through struggles, hardships, war, death and destruction, dedication has been seen and completed throughout the sands of time.
Dedication is something that has been discussed, seen, and performed in my life and the generations before me. It is something I use in my own personal life, with track, livestock, and school. If you have ever loved something immensely then you probably applied dedication to that which you love. And if you feel compassion towards something then you should most definitely dedicate some more time to it. Dedication is an immeasurable amount of compassion that you can put into an event, individual, or object that you feel strongly. Therefore, always keep doing what you love the most, and make sure to put in the time and work for it as well.

February 10, 2011

Mr. Nolan Eastin
P.E. and Conditioning Instructor, Head Football Coach
Roosevelt High School
616 North Second Street
Johnstown, CO 80534

Dear Mr. Eastin,

As we always have nice conversations in class, I probably forgot to mention to you that I am applying to a few alternative colleges this month, and for some scholarships in the area of education and track and field. I would appreciate it fully if you would write a letter of recommendation for me to submit with the applications to these universities and scholarships. After four years of classes with you, and two years of football, you know my qualities as a person, my strive for success, and potential to become a teacher and compete in track and field at the college level.

As my instructor for P.E. 1 and 2, Lifetime Sports, and football, you are familiar with my work ethic, determination to win, and passion to excel. I believe you have a good sense of the attributes needed to progress at the college level. I am asking for your recommendation because these scholarships are important for me to pay for college, and I should have a few colleges in reserve in case plans ever fall through. I aided in my mother's Kindergarten class for a semester and it convinced me that I want to influence others as all my instructors have influenced me.

Please mail me the letter, or e-mail it to me at remmington16@gmail.com . I truly appreciate your help, and thank you for taking time out of your personal life to write this letter. If you have any questions or concerns please call me at the above cell phone number.

Yours sincerely,

February 9, 2011

Mrs. Robin Wells
Health and P.E. Instructor
Roosevelt High School
Johnstown, CO 80534

Dear Mrs. Wells,
As we often discuss college, academics, and track in our conversations, I plan on applying to a few alternative universities and major scholarships in the next few weeks. I would greatly appreciate it if you would write me a letter of recommendation to send with these scholarship and application forms. You know my talent and true potential in track and field, and the quality of work I completed while in your health class. I have great personal qualities, as you know, and have a high chance of succeeding in the education field.

As my instructor for health and P.E. classes, and my coach for long and triple-jump, you are familiar with my work ethic, strong people skills, and great passion and determination to excel in athletics and academics. I personally believe your extensive knowledge would point out the fact that I could succeed in college education. Very few education and track and field scholarships are given to students, but they would be very helpful for me while attending college. This last semester I aided for my mother in her Kindergarten class, and it absolutely convinced me that I want to become a teacher. I have also been helping numerous students in 4-H and FFA for a few years now as well.

Please e-mail the letter to me at remmington16@gmail.com, give it to me in the halls, or call me at the above number and we can make an arrangement. Thanks for all your help and taking time out of your personal life to help me. I truly appreciate it.

Roosevelt High School
North Second Street
Johnstown, CO 80534

Dear Mr. Walz,
It has been a few weeks since we have last had a conversation, but this month I am applying for a few academic and athletic scholarships around the country, as well as a few alternative colleges. I would greatly appreciate it if you wrote me a letter of recommendation, therefore I could send it with the multiple scholarships and colleges I am applying for. “PROFILE A PERSON OR EVENT THAT HAS INFLUENCED YOU, AND EXPLAIN HOW THIS HAS MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE!” In 200 words or less.

The most influential person that has ever impacted my life would be my grandfather. My grandfather was a religious person, informing me of the values of religion, and ultimately teaching me to become a better person by attending church regularly. He always emphasized having faith in a cause no matter how great or small, providing me with the passion to keep raising and showing livestock still to this day. Grandpa enabled me to learn exceedingly about math and science, for his master’s degree was in those fields. Baseball and track are the highlights in my life, he taught me to excel in each by demonstrating how to use eyes and quick wrists to drive the ball into the infield’s gaps, or the basics to perfect jumping form. What propelled me to state as a freshman in Triple-Jump was his information, and deep belief in my ability to perform. I often went on hunting trips with grandpa, enjoying his company while learning patience, love of the outdoors, and the significance of harvesting animals with one shot. My grandfather’s counsel was essential to my maturity and development, and he is therefore considered the most influential person to enter my life.
